Toxicology

Toxicology is the study of the adverse effects of chemicals on living organisms. It is the study of symptoms, mechanisms, treatments and detection of poisoning, especially the poisoning of people.

House MD is one of my favorite TV series, even if there are some unfamiliar words that I don’t understand.
In some of the episodes I have seen in House MD, House had difficulty in detoxing from Vicodin , since he was informed that there are other treatments or medicines that can lessen his leg pain.  There was an episode wherein he volunteered to enter in a rehabilitation center to try to take away Vicodin from his lifestyle.

Like any other people, being addicted to drugs, alcohol or other chemicals can change the way he connects with others.  It may be because of the chemical reactions of the body from the abusive intake of these “poisons” of the body.

Poisoning can result from an overdose of drugs that are brought over the counter and even those are prescribed drugs.

A poison (toxin) is a substance which, if taken into the body in sufficient quantity, may cause temporary or permanent damage.

Poisons can be:

Swallowed

  Absorbed through the skin
Inhaled
Injected

How to Treat Poisoning

  • You should understand what poisoning is
  • Remain calm
  • Check for signs and symptoms of poisoning.
  • Check the victim's state of consciousness
  • Call the poison control center for a conscious (awake and alert) victim.
  • Stay on the phone and follow all the instructions given to you by emergency assistance or the poison control center.
  • Note some of the basic responses that you might be able to do before help arrives
